JOURNALISTS
Gastronimus has been talked about in newspapers,
on the Internet and in book reviews. Hailed as
a breakthrough in children’s food writing,
the cosmic chef has won phenomenal approval ratings
from children, parents and teachers.
Gastronimus is an official recommendation of the
School Library Association.
The comic novel-cum-children’s food
book has been published at a time
of historically unparalleled interest in children’s
eating habits and of efforts to improve
childhood literacy rates. It is one of only a handful
of children’s novels which are directly
relevant to every child between the
ages of 8 and 12.
This means 4.5 million children in
Britain and 20 million children in America.
Gastronimus has won an enviable list of supporters:

Sheila Dillon of the BBC Food Programme
The Food Standards Agency
BAFTA-winning children’s TV director Adrian Hedley

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Charlie Duncan is a writer, former Japanese linguist and
languages teacher. He lived and worked in Japan for four years.
He was based in Tokyo for two years before accidentally paying for a
giant removal van to take his suitcase to central Japan.
Here he made heroic atttempts to study
biology in the Japanese language
at the local Japanese university. It has since been said
that Charlie's knowledge of Japanese is wider and
more useless than any other foreigner who
has studied Japanese.
TRAFFIC LIGHT FOOD LABELLING
An important innovation of the story is Gastronimus’s
‘Rainbow Stars’. The intrepid chef pulls the multi-coloured
stars out of his pocket and touches them against any
substance in outer space and they flash red,
yellow or green to show how safe it is. The Rainbow Stars
are carried over into the food section where they
sit next to every recipe as simple traffic
light food labels - showing in a fun way, how
healthy each recipe is.
